OVERVIEW
For their production of Romeo and Juliet, the CSUDH Theatre Department decided to make artistic choices to set it apart from the original play. In this adaptation, both Romeo and Juliet will be played by women, the setting will be a "Verona" that reflects Southern California, and the Montague and Capulet families will be immigrants or descendants of immigrants from Mexican or Latin American countries.
CSUDH Theater department requested deliverables for their adaptation of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. My task was to create a poster as well as graphics for social media and electronic billboards. They requested specific elements to be included, such as rich colors, silhouettes, the moon, feminine forms, and symbols of love.
FINAL POSTER DESIGN
APPROACH AND SOLUTION
I began by creating a mood board to get a better sense of the client's requirements, including symbols of love, feminine forms, and rich colors, while also ensuring it aligned with the culture and aesthetic of Los Angeles. I drew inspiration from Shepard Fairey and his impactful murals around Los Angeles, as I felt this would be a good way to establish the LA aesthetic while also incorporating the elements requested by the client.
SKETCHES FOR POSTER DESIGN
For my initial idea sketches of the project, I aimed to incorporate the two feminine forms while ensuring that the other elements of love and references from the original Romeo and Juliet play were maintained.
